Tips for properly maintaining your motorcycle!

Proper maintenance for a more efficient motorcycle… and for your safety!

Beyond an online store of spare parts, mechanics is our first job: maintenance, repair, customization, that's our thing!

So here are the essential points to maintain your bike.

The oils

These are engine, gearbox and primary oil. Oils lose their effectiveness over time, whether the motorcycle is running or not. We advise you to change the three oils and the oil filter every year. It is necessary to monitor your oil level regularly: run your motorcycle for about 2 to 3 minutes and let it rest for 1 minute then check the level. The engine oil level can be checked on the motorcycle stand for all Harley models (except for the V-rod and Harley three-wheeler range).

brake fluid

A brake fluid check is recommended at each oil change. Essential element for the proper functioning of the brake system! A fluid with too high a humidity level loses performance and impairs the proper functioning of the brake system.

fork oil

It is changed every 80,000 km or more frequently if the use of the motorcycle is intensive. The oil guarantees good handling of the motorcycle and a good response to jerks.

Brake and oil hoses

Check that the hoses do not show any leaks. A loss of fluids can be dangerous (loss of braking, vehicle control, etc.).

The drive belt

Check his blood pressure and look at his condition; if you notice notches like tears, it must be changed! If you have a chain kit instead of the belt, the chain must be cleaned and lubricated every 500 km. The tension - chain or belt - should be checked every 1,000 km max.

The tires

Major element to take into account in the maintenance of your motorcycle! He should be number one! Every 15 days, during daily use, check that the tire pressure is correct. Refer to your motorcycle's maintenance booklet for the instructions to follow (depending on the load, the type of motorcycle). Inflation pressures, unless otherwise stated, apply to cold tires. Indeed, the pressure rises (by approximately 0.3 bar) when the air heats up in the tire. So check the pressures at the start or take this difference into account. The air pressure in the tires influences road holding, braking efficiency and tire life. Logically, it is also advisable to monitor the general condition of the tires in order to replace them when they are too worn: The tread and the sidewalls which must be free of cuts. The tread depth must be greater than the legal minimum (1 mm). For replacement, if you do not have the appropriate tools, avoid changing your tires yourself. Not only is it hard to mount, and it is quick to damage the rims by a wrong move, a tool that slips or jumps...

Cleaning

Put yourself in the shade to wash your motorcycle, on the one hand to have a better result and on the other hand, the cleaning products dry too quickly in the sun and can damage the paint of your machine. High-pressure jets are not recommended to preserve paint and stickers, they can also cause corrosion on certain parts of the motorcycle.

It's changeable!

The mileages between each replacement vary according to the type of part, the seriousness of their maintenance, the type of driving and the roads taken and the machines. A tire can last from 5,000 to 25,000 km, a chain from 10,000 to 40,000 km, a shock absorber is reconditioned every 40,000 to 100,000 km depending on use, a fork oil is changed after 20,000 km, but can last 50,000 km if you drive "cushy"!
